CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!
CHICAGO -- Went to the Cubs/White Sox game yesterday at Wrigley. Sat in the bleachers listening to the endless trash-talk from the Sox fans as their team was up by 1 at the top of the 8th.
But then came the glorious bottom of the 8th.
Cubs tie it up. Sox can't contain the surging Cub team. Bases loaded. BAM! Grand Slam, baby! I have never, ever seen a Wrigley crowd that excited. Beers flying in the air. High-fives all around. And, as icing on the cake ... the smattering of dejected Sox fans. As the guy in front of me put it to his Sox-fan friend, "Oh does that sting a little bit? Does that hurt? Just a little? What? Southsider gonna cry now? Southsider gonna cry?"
The photo is right after the Grand Slam sealed the deal. The woman with the Sox gear was at the game with her husband, a Cubs fan. She was needling him the entire game. For the remainder of the game she consoled herself muttering "World Series ... World Series ... "
Sorry, lady. You're living in the past.
Now, to be fair, the Sox got a little payback today with a grand slam of their own. But I have confidence the Cubs will close the gap if we can only get past this rain delay ...
